Trndez, also Tyarndarach is an Armenian holiday celebrated annually on February 13-14 and marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring. Traditionally, people gather around a bonfire in the center of the, jump over the bonfire and make wishes for a healthy and prosperous year. People bring food and drinks to share around the fire and the celebration often lasts until the early morning hours. In some regions of Armenia, Trndez is celebrated with a feast that includes meats and sweets, followed by dancing and singing.
The celebration of Trndez is believed to have originated in ancient pagan times as a way to honor the spring equinox and the rebirth of nature after winter. It is also believed to have been a time to honor ancestors, with the bonfire representing the hearth of the family and the circle of the participants representing the family’s unity. The festivities are thought to have been brought to Armenia by the Armenians who settled in the country during the Byzantine period. The holiday is also known for its traditional food served during the evening, including khash, cheese, and lavash. The burning of the juniper is thought to bring good luck, health, and happiness to the family.
