Wings of Tatev: Visiting the World’s Longest Cable Car

Few rides in the world combine engineering and scenery quite like the Wings of Tatev. Stretching 5.7 kilometers across the Vorotan gorge in southern Armenia, it has held the Guinness World Record since 2010 as the longest non-stop double-track cable car on Earth. The 12-minute crossing ends at one of Armenia’s most dramatic sights: the 9th-century Tatev Monastery, perched on a clifftop above the gorge.

What to Expect on the Ride

The cabin glides silently over the gorge, giving unobstructed views of the canyon floor, the Vorotan river, and the monastery growing larger on the horizon. It’s a smooth, calm ride even for travelers uneasy about heights — the height above the gorge floor is offset by how gradually the cabin rises and falls along the route.

  • Duration: About 12 minutes each way
  • Height above the gorge: Up to 320 meters at the highest point
  • Operating season: Year-round, weather permitting
  • Best time to go: Morning for clearer visibility and shorter lines; autumn for foliage color in the gorge

Tatev Monastery Itself

Built in the 9th century, Tatev Monastery was once a major center of learning and religious life in medieval Armenia, and its remote, defensible position on the cliff edge is part of what allowed it to survive for over a thousand years. Beyond the cable car views, the monastery complex itself — its churches, defensive walls, and the famous “Gavazan” pillar that once served as an early seismograph — is worth an hour or two of unhurried exploring.

How to Get There

Tatev sits far to the south, roughly a 4–5 hour drive from Yerevan, which is why most visitors treat it as a full-day excursion rather than a quick stop. Many travelers combine the trip with nearby highlights along the route, making it one of the more rewarding long day trips from the capital.

Sara Voyage arranges guided day trips to Tatev with transport, an English or Russian-speaking guide, and cable car tickets included — a good option if you’d rather not manage the logistics of a long southern drive yourself.
